  • Established and owned several private companies, including independent consultancy companies, and MapWorld NZ.
  • Spent 13 years as an academic at Lincoln University in parks, recreation and tourism.
  • Began her career as a public sector employee (Conservation, Lands and Survey, Statistics).

Throughout her career, Kay has been actively involved in the natural environment and recreation sectors. Her personal philosophy is that it’s important to ‘give something back’ and she has held many leadership roles. Her work covers two main areas – research and planning, and governance and facilitation.

Research and planning:

  • PhD in recreation planning from the University of Otago.
  • Approx. 70 published research papers and reports, including 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.
  • Research Associate at Lincoln University.
  • Accredited NZ Recreation Professional.
  • Member of the NZ Recreation Association, and the World Commission on Protected Areas of the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

Governance and facilitation:

  • Chair of the NZ Conservation Authority (2011-2013).
  • Multiple Crown governance roles including ministerial appointments on the New Zealand Geographic Board, the New Zealand Walking Access Commission, the Canterbury Aoraki Conservation Board, and the New Zealand Conservation Authority.
  • Various executive positions on New Zealand conservation and recreation NGOs including the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust, NZ Recreation Association, Outdoors NZ, NZ Geographical Society, Access and Environment Commission of the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation, Isaac Centre for Nature Conservation, and the NZ Tourism Industry Federation.
  • Certified RMA Hearings Commissioner.
  • Member of the NZ Institute of Directors: completed several governance courses run by the Institute.

Kay is a keen outdoor recreationist, getting away sea kayaking, mountain biking, rafting or tramping as often as possible. She hasn’t yet worked out the attraction of endurance events, but continues to enter them in weak moments.
